WHO do you want to be?

I read Atomic Habits by James Clear in January of this year and I have read it two more times since then. This book is on my all-time TOP 10 list of books. If I could leave just 10 books with my kids that would help guide and shape their lives this would be one of those books! James explains a simple two-step process for making meaningful change in your life:

  1. Decide the type of person you want to be
  2. Prove it to yourself with small wins

"Ultimately, your habits matter because they help you become the type of person you wish to be. I have a friend you lost over 100 pounds by asking herself, 'What would a healthy person do?' All day long, she would use this question as a guide. Would a healthy person walk or take a cab? Would a healthy person order a burrito or salad? She figured that if she acted like a healthy person long enough, eventually she would become that person. She was right."

"True behavior change is identity change. You might start a habit because of motivation, but the only reason why you stick with one is that it becomes part of your identity."

"Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you with to become. No single instance will transform your beliefs, but as the votes build up, so does the evidence of your new identity. The most practical way to change who you are is to change what you do."

In summary: "The most effective way to change your habits is to focus on WHO you wish to become. Your identity emerges our of your habits. Every action you take is a vote for the person you wish to become. The real reason why habits matter is not because they can get you better results, but because they can change your beliefs about yourself!"

So start today and vote for your new identity. Maybe you ask yourself during the day, What would a super healthy person drink right now? Then take action and drink your glass of distilled water instead of the less healthy alternative!

Distilled Water and Weight Loss

It all starts with sugar... the average American consumes about 150 pounds of sugar per year. For many American's that means eating their body weight in sugar every year! Now to be fair this means sugar you are getting from everything you eat and drink... from healthy and unhealthy sources. Out of the 150 pounds of sugar consumed year about 60 pounds of it is classified as "Added Sugar" and this is what we want to focus on.

The Science: Added Sugar is "Not So Sweet"

It turns out that added sugar is NOT so sweet when you stop and look at the scientific studies and data! Of the 60 pounds of added sugar about 30 pounds of it comes from the "sugary beverage category".

The #1 SOURCE of added sugars in our diet are sugar-sweetened beverages like soda and energy/sports drinks! We need to stop drinking this unhealthy liquid sugar!

Why should I worry about sugary drinks?

The American Heart Association facts may surprise you.

  • Most Americans consume nearly 20 teaspoons of added sugars each day. That’s more than TRIPLE the recommended daily limit for women and DOUBLE for men!
  • The numbers for children are even worse! American kids consume over 65 pounds of added sugar per year. Children are ingesting over 30 gallons of added sugar from beverages alone!
  • Sugar-sweetened beverages like soda and energy/sports drinks are the #1 SOURCE of added sugars in our diet.
  • Beverages are the leading category source of added sugars (exactly 47% of all added sugars which breaks down to 25% soft drinks, 11% fruit drinks, 7% coffee/tea, and 3% sport/energy drinks)
  • A can (12 FL OZ) of regular soda has about 150 calories and 10 teaspoons of added sugar.
  • According to the Journal of the American Medical Association of "A total of 3,500 calories equals 1 pound of body fat."

What health problems are caused by all of this sugar?

The CDC warns, "People who often drink sugary drinks are more likely to face health problems, such as weight gain, obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease, cavities, and gout, a type of arthritis."

Distilled Water and Weight Loss Benefits

Steve Zim is the author of "SUPER HERO NUTRITION". Steve is the owner of ATighterU gym in the Los Angeles area. He is known "as the trainer to the stars". Basically he will have actors come to him and say, "I have 10 weeks to look like a super hero!" Steve Zim trained Chris Evans (aka Captain America) and helped him develop into his Superhero body. Steve finally wrote a book that explains his nutritional philosophy in SuperHero Nutrition and this is what he says about water and sugary drinks:

"Consume at least two liters of water a day. Many times we feel hungry when we're actually thirsty. Most people do not drink enough water, and they find themselves eating food instead of just downing a glass of water, which is what their body is actually seeking. You should avoid "healthy" sports drinks, they're full of sugar. Avoid fruit juices. Pure fruit juice contains nothing carbohydrates (sugar) with virtually zero fiber. Drinking it drivers your insulin through the roof! One glass of orange juice contains fruit from multiple oranges (between 5-7), but without the beneficial that whole oranges contain. Avoid sugary beverages. Sugary sodas (and other beverages) often contain high-fructose corn syrup, or other ridiculously unhealthy versions. This type of sugar is sugar is even more damaging to your health and fat-loss program than table sugar (sucrose)." - Steve Zim

The core of SuperHero nutrition is all about controlling your blood sugar levels and insulin levels. Basically when you consume sugar that spikes your blood sugar and your pancreas releases insulin to bring your blood sugar level down. The job of your insulin is to transport the sugar to where your body needs it for energy.

Your body basically has 2 modes of using energy:

  1. Sugar Mode: Your body uses sugar in the bloodstream and other sugar stored in your body for fuel and energy. When you blood sugar is high then your body is using that sugar for energy.
  2. Fat Mode (aka Fat-Loss Mode): You body uses stored fat for fuel and energy. This can only happen when your blood sugar is low and your insulin is low. This is the key to fat-loss because we want to use our extra stored fat as fuel and not sugar. Many Americans have extra visceral fat that is located around the belly that is putting pressure on our organs. This is some of the worst kinds of fat in our bodies.

Steve explains, "Insulin moves the sugar in your blood to your liver and muscles to use blood glucose as a source of energy. But both your liver and muscles have a limited amount of storage, so any leftover blood sugar is then transported by insulin to be stored as bodyfat. To boil it down, your body will not readily burn bodyfat until your body stops releasing insulin. You CANNOT burn stored fat for energy when your body is releasing insulin. When insulin levels are elevated, you body burns glucose rather than stored fat."

The Amazing Water Science of Fat Loss:

So what does water actually do to help you lose fat. It is critically important that you stay hydrated because your body is 70% water. You cells have a high volume of water in them and you must have water to push out the fat and toxins from your cells. Your body needs oxygen and water available to burn your fat efficiently.

When you body is in "fat burning mode or fat loss mode" you body will break up the fat lipids in your fat cells and release their energy. All that hydrogen, carbon and oxygen in those molecules will still be there afterward. So now your body needs to get rid of that byproduct of the fat energy. 20% of the fat mass that is burned in your body is lost through water or transported out of your body through your urine or sweat. That is where the phrase, "WATER IN, FAT OUT" comes from. For example: if over the next week you burn 1 pound of fat or you break-down 1 pound of fat that is burned as energy, then 20% of that fat will be removed by water in your body. Since distilled water is clean and pure, it is able to do an even better job of transporting and eliminating waste like this from you body! If you want to dive even deeper into this science there an interesting study done by the University of South Wales that answered the question: When you lose weight, where does the fat actually go?

In addition to water being a critical factor to fat loss, water also helps:

  • keep a normal body temperature
  • lubricates and cushion joints
  • cushions the brain
  • protects your spinal cord and other sensitive tissues
  • removes waste through urination, perspiration and bowel movements
  • aids in digestion
  • detoxification
  • improves brain function
  • helps maintain proper blood pressure
  • improves kidney function and prevents kidney damage
  • boosts performance during exercise
  • your blood is 90% water and blood delivers oxygen to different parts of your body
  • and more

We have just been talking about replacing added sugar drinks with 0 calorie pure distilled water as a weight loss strategy. We haven't even talked the 80,000 commercially produced chemicals that are found in tap water and how toxic tap water could negatively impact your fat loss. A Durastill Home Water Distillation Unit removes chemicals, virus, bacteria, poisons (like mercury & arsenic), toxic heavy metals (like lead), prescription drugs, radioactive particles (like radon), nitrates, petroleum and more. How would drinking residue of prescription drugs from the tap water in the soda you just drank from you favorite restaurant effect your body and fat-loss? Or how would drinking a little bit of virus or bacteria or poison effect your body and fat-loss? It is kind of mind blowing when you start to SEE what is in tap water, bottled water and any kind of water that is lower quality than distilled!

MY Distilled Water Weight Loss 30-Day Challenge RESULTS

Before I issued the challenge to y'all, I took the challenge for myself. I actually lost 5.6 pounds of fat during the first 30 days and I was so motivated that I kept going. I lost another 5.6 pounds during the following 30 days. I lost 11.2 pounds total over 60 days. As I saw better results I was actually motivated to change more than just drinking distilled water... I improved my life in several other ways at the same time. I have transformed my lifestyle, self-confidence and health.

Remember that 1 pound of Fat is 3,500 calories and a small 12 oz can soda has 150 calories and 10 teaspoons of added sugar. Extra sugar is turned to fat and then stored as body fat. [150 calories x 365 days = 54,750 extra calories from added sugar]

"If you drink one sugary soda every single day for a year your body will gain 12 pounds of fat for the year!" - Steve Zim

#1 Distilled Water Weight Loss SUCCESS SECRET:

"Let's just reverse that effect... if you just replace the daily sugar soda/drink with distilled water you will lose 12 pounds in a year! That will saves you 54,750 calories in extra sugar over the next year. Pretty awesome science!" - Brandon

So what did I do to achieve these results?

#1- I decided who I wanted to become and why I wanted to lose fat, get in-shape and be even healthier. I wanted to get in-shape and have more energy so I could play tag with my kids and be an awesome dad. I wanted to feel strong and confident. I wanted to prove to myself

#2- I created an "I am Declaration Statement" that I repeat every morning when I wake up and every night right before I drift off to sleep. I was a little hesitant to share this but I am going to share my declaration statement with you. This helped my believe in myself and stay motivated:

"I am a creative genius. I can do anything that I focus my mind on. I like myself. I am proud of myself. I am unstoppable!"

#3- I found a picture of the type of people I want to look like. I posted these pictures on my Vision Board. I have a picture of Captain America and Superman. I looked at these pictures at least once per day to focus my mind and visualize my goal. I then repeated this phrase in my mind:

"I am a fat burning machine. My body effectively and efficiently burns my excess fat for fuel. I am a muscle building machine. My body effectively and efficiently builds muscle. I am Captain America. I am Superman."

#4- I got a free habit tracking app on my phone and I tracked my new habits of declarations, visualization, drinking distilled water, exercise, and eating healthy. Everyday I voted for the new person I was becoming and this was my evidence.

#5- I increased my education. I read Atomic Habits by James Clear and SuperHero Nutrition by Steve Zim.

#6- I only drank distilled water and I made sure to get at least 2 liters of pure distilled water each day. Luckily I have a water distiller in my home so this was the simplest step (No soda, no gatorade, no energy drinks, no fruit juice, nothing but pure water). I followed exactly what Steve Zim says about sugary beverage in his book.

#7- I was motivated to not only drink healthier, but eat healthier. I followed Steve Zim's SuperHero Nutrition. I decided why not cut out sugar from what I drink and what I eat. Because you are what you drink and what you eat!

#8- I started exercising consistently an followed Steve Zim's SuperHero Exercise program called ATUMOBILE.com. I lift weights 3 days a week and do cardio 3 days a week. This is a long-term and permanent change for me. I am taking it slow and steady because I want to slowly build up strength and endurance without pulling any muscles.

#9- I got rid of junk food, candy, soda, or anything else that was unhealthy for me to eat and drink. Yes that means I chose to stop drinking the most amazing drink on planet earth... Dr. Pepper! I removed this temptation from my environment!

James Clear says, "Motivation is overrated; environment matters more! In the long-run, we become a product of the environment that we live in. To put it bluntly, I have never seen someone consistently stick to a positive habit in a negative environment."

#10- I planned out my day which included what I would eat and drink for meals, when I would workout and when I would go to bed.

#11- I made sure to get 8 hours of sleep each night.

Good luck I now you can do anything you focus your mind on. Start today and create a new version of yourself. Drink distilled water as part of your weight loss strategy and cast a vote today for the person you are becoming. Then cast another vote tomorrow and the next day.

By the way I am not getting paid to recommend these books or anything. I just love them and wanted to share them with you. The links on this page are just for your education and to help you out. - Brandon
